As you may know, digital marketing and its scopes are new professions, that emerged in 2000’s. When it comes to acquiring employees, many companies focuses solely on whether the candidates’ CVs fits the job description. I think many related positions and their scope are still being discovered by organizations and cannot be defined by some bulletpoint qualities. I would like to stress out one very important point while you are looking for a digital merketeer: Marketing knowledge, a creative mind and a vision. As far as i am concerned without the understanding of marketing, it is highly unlikely for one to become a true digital marketeer, dare I say impossible!
If you are familiar with the wanted profile of digital marketing related positions then you know that the common perception is that “Digital marketeers should be really good at math or they should have strong analytics skills.” Do you think it is enough for being a successful digital marketeer? I believe the answer of this question is a big NO. It is definetely not enough. Digital Marketing requires marketing skills hence the word “Marketing”.
When marketing mix (4P, also 7P as an extended version) is taken into consideration, the biggest misconception is that digital marketing experts are only responsible for the “Promotion” side. I have to say that digital marketeers shouldn’t limit themselves to any spesific “P”. Before they take an action, they have to consider all the methods of marketing such as marketing mix, Porter’s five forces, SWOT or PESTEL etc.
To sum up, digital marketing is an enlarging field where its scope is still not crystal clear. So, in my humble opinion, when you are looking for a digital markeeter, always be sure that he/she is into “Marketing”.
